latest TF Fan-wank, (erm, Fan Club), story

The originals... ok, not exactly, but the original named "The TransFormers" anyway. Take THAT, Diaclone!

latest TF Fan-wank, (erm, Fan Club), story

Post by Dominic »

Flames of Yesterday:
This is the latest TF Fan Club story. It is *terrible*, even by the (digging beneath rock bottom) standards of the Fan Club. I got maybe 7 pages in before I decided to just skim the damned thing. Even skimming, I was noticing cringe worthy elements. (I am given to understand that reading in detail is made all the more difficult by the sheer number of typing errors.) Frankly, it defies comprehension how and why the Fan Club uses stories like this as a selling point to join the club. To be perfectly honest, this one made me completely give up on the idea of picking up a club exclusive Dion figure.
Grade: F Bad enough on its own, and made all the worse when compared to IDW's currently strong offerings.

Someone leaked this somewhere on the Internet. I'm gonna read it later today.

What? Don't look at me like that. If it's as bad as Dom says, then why should I pay for it?

Hey, I read friend's copies.

The fact that these stories are presented as a bonus to signing on with the club serves to make the fact they are so bad more annoying.

I didn't renew club membership this year because the gestalt is complete, and because I decided I could use the $40 elsewhere (such as buying IDW's comics). That being said, I rarely read any of the text stories in the club magazine. They just never interested me enough to get beyond the first few sentences, so I couldn't tell you if they were any good or not. Most fan fiction that I've tried to read isn't very good, so I suspect that much of the club's official fiction isn't either. Though I suppose that's an unfair generalization.

I've found that I prefer visual media for Transformers fiction to text anyway. One part of the appeal of the characters is the way they look and how they fit in the world around them. Put 'em in prose and they aren't sufficiently different from humans when it comes to actions and thought patterns to really keep them interesting. It takes a really good writer to overcome that, and most fan fiction writers are not that good.

Point of information: I was talking about one of the PDF stories, not a story from the magazine. (The level of quality is comparable though.)

The "Legends" anthology from '04 had some good offerings in it. There were also some clunkers. But, there are some good TF text stories out there. Some of the old UK stories were also pretty good. I would really like to see some guys from the GW stable tackle TF text fiction.

Most fanfic really is not very good, as it tends to be really self-indulgent.

It doesn't help that all the club prose stories are basically M Sipher and Trent Troop writing fanfic.

At least 86 and I's stupidly insular fanfic was well-written, and we bothered to apply the skills later. Yay the lyrics writing.

Dom, I'd love it if you posted your favourite couple lines from this story. The more garbled, stilted or overwrought, the better. I want a new sig. Cheers!

I need to dig it out. But, rest assured, I will.

I just really like bad English. Camp value, y'know? I often give the things I write purposefully awful titles to catch the audience's attention. Authors have been doing if for centuries. The Grapes of Wrath, wtf?! =p

Of course, if it's more tedious than funny, I'm afraid I might be wasting your time, but I'm interested to see the extent of the disaster.

It is all around bad. Bad lines. Tedious lines. Even lines with chicken pox. Hot dogs, armour hot dogs!

I can root around and try to find it later.
