books and toys

Post by Dominic »

Went searching for "Exiles" yesterday. Despite having a shelf date of 10/3, it was not out. (For some reason, book stores around here have a problem with that. Comic stores get there stuff out on time every week. But, bookstores cannot be bothered.)

If I get a copy, I will review it. But, "Exodus" was not good enough to inspire me to go out and pick up the next book. Additionally, as I understand it, there is no hardcover edition for "Exiles", which is also irksome.

And, Twincast with tapes, Soundblaster with tapes and no way in hell that price is legit....

-$20 for a Legend....even after import fees? Really? No way.

After importing and everything, $70 is not all that bad for Soundblaster or Twincast. That said, I'll be passing.

A friend of mine ordered a set for himself and one for me. I have saved enough by skipping pretty much every other toy this year to justify this. (And, cleaning out my collection a bit has freed up more than enough room.)

By the way, I am pretty sure that the Rumble/Frenzy recolour is not Enemy, but is in fact Cassette Man.

Nah. Cassette Man was just Soundwave, who was packaged with what became...the red and black cassette guy.

There was a pre-TF Frenzy/Rumble that (if I am remembering right) looked like the guy packaged with Soundblaster.

Yeah, I think he was a single-packed cassette guy.

I know O6 was thinking it, so I'll say it: Dom, for someone that gets as many books as you do, you really should reconsider your beef with Amazon. Bookstores are pretty much dead (well, one of them is dead, and as much as I like the other one, it's likely not far behind).

This is something I've been musing. Retail stores are actually functionally terrible for trying to actually find anything you specifically want to buy. I went to three or four different stores trying to find the special edition Fight Club DVD (because I'm not going to buy the shitty one-disc DVD because fuck that), didn't find it. I ended up buying it on Amazon.

However, retail stores are 'great' for when you just want to Buy Stuff. You know that feeling. "I have disposable income, and I've forgotten about the multitude of things I know I particularly have wanted to buy for months on end, so I bought three DVDs of movies I've never even seen and have no idea if I will like!" Or "I bought this $8 Tony Hawk game because fuck yeah Tony Hawk." And when you're in the mood to make a purchase like that, it's great, but actually trying to find anything? It's almost a waste of time. It's why I generally buy all my stuff online now.

There is absolutely no reason that Amazon cannot take PayPal, eBay associations be damned.

Retailers need to smarten the hell up about getting product on time.

I would probably be more willing to consider Amazon if I did not live near a hobby shop that has an excellent book section. I can make a quick detour on the way back from wrestling some weeks and pick up plenty of books.
However, retail stores are 'great' for when you just want to Buy Stuff.
They are also good if you just want to try something. When I do go online for something, I typically have a list. When I do just "find somethign", it is almost invariable something that I have been looking for for a while or would be looking for by default.

For example, if I find Japanese Minicons while on BBTS, I am interested even if I was not specifically looking for the because Minicons are something that I like. But, i am not likely to just try a random figure out if I see it online. At a store, I am more likely to consider a figure that I might otherwise skip. (For example, I probably would not have bothered with "Generations" Thunderwing or RTS Deepdive online.)

Much the same applies with books, only to a greater degree.

My epic search around town just to track down 1 copy of Heavy Metal proves this. Or at least supports it.
