The Rocky movies copied off the Cinderella man story.
No it's not a 100% copy. But there are so many similarities that it clearly was used as a Bible of sorts.
The Cinderella man marries the sister of his best friend. Rocky marries the sister of his friend.
Adrian & the cinderella man's girlfriend/wife didn't like the boxing violence,so they rarely see the boxing matches in person.
Rocky damages a body part in Rocky 1 & needs to switch hands when he boxes in rocky II. The cinderella man damages one of his hands & needs to switch hands when boxing.
Both boxing fighters are south paw left handed boxers.
Both Boxers have tons of money & loose it in bad investments. The cinderella man had a lot of money that he lost in bad investments. Rocky lost all of his money in Rocky V thanks to paulie making bad investments.
The Cinderella man when he had money, made a bad investement by opening up a bar. He lost the bar because he let too many of his friends drink for free. Rocky in that "Rocky balboa" movie has a sports bar restaurant that he owns.
Both fighters were considered wash outs & the betting odds were really poor for them when they both fought for the championship belt.
Both Boxers fought someone in the ring that killed someone in the Ring. The World boxing Champ that fought the Cinderella man killed someone in the ring. In Rocky IV,The Russian boxer killed Apollo in the ring.
Both fighters had no managers when they started boxing & got managers.
In Rocky I,Rocky had a side job where he worked on the docks. The Cinderella man when he got hurt & quit boxing for a while,Had a job where he worked on the Docks.
Both boxers had really bad boxing records at one time in their lives.

I'm not a fan of boxing in general, but even I know that the Rocky films are inspired by several real boxers, including this guy, whose fight with Muhammad Ali actually was the inspiration for the first Rocky film. I'm sure a lot of the comparisons you make can be said of many of those boxers as well.

Re: The Rocky movies copied off the Cinderella man story.
And some of what you're quoting about the Cinderella Man story was complete hogwash anyway. For instance, the Ivan Drago analogue in your analogy did kill someone in the ring, yes. By accident. And cried about it when they pronounced the man dead. And furthermore, raised money for his widow. A far cry from Dolph Lundgren's "if he dies, he dies". So more like, when they were writing the script and making the movie, maybe they were influenced by the most famous boxing movies?
I always like boxing well enough, myself. Even got to meet Muhammed Ali the one time and still have an autographed picture from that.
