Which TF lines in your collection are you most attached to?

Post by andersonh1 »

This is a question I've been asking myself lately. I'd like to buy Metroplex when it comes out, but in order to justify the money I think I'm going to sell off some of the collection on Ebay or wherever, and I'm giving some thought to which figures I'm willing to sell, and which ones absolutely won't be going anywhere unless it's a choice between selling them and eating. And by then it'll be too late, because the internets will probably have long since been cut off.

And maybe it's not an entire line. Maybe you'd go figure by figure. I think for example that Cybertron is a line where I'd sell some figures but keep others.

Eras I can't see selling off:
- G1, including E-hobby and other reissues. These are by far my sentimental favorites
- most Universe figures I've bought, because they're updates of G1 characters. Really, just about any new version of an old figure that I like is unlikely to go
- RID - some of my favorite figures ever come from this line
- Armada - I've got a lot of fondness for this line
- Beast Machines
- Animated - not because I'm a big fan, but because I only bought three figures from the line, so I only got ones I really wanted.
- Titanium
- Alternators - The one line I've tried to collect every last figure from. Still have a few to go, but I'll get them one day.

Possibilities:
- Beast Wars - as much as I like the show, I can't say I'm all that attached to most of the figures. I think I'd pick and choose
- Energon - I only have a few of these anyway. The smaller Energon Megatron already went the Ebay route a few years ago. I liked him fine, I just wanted the money for other things. I can see some other figures going the same way.
- Cybertron - a good line, and I wouldn't sell all of them, but again I can see picking a few figures to sell. Primus isn't going anywhere though.
- the movie lines: I'd keep a few of these that I'm most fond of, but I can see clearing a lot of these figures out. Would they sell? That's the question.

I'm sure I've missed some, but this is kind of how I break things up in my mind. Really, it's tricky because I've never been a completionist. I always buy just the figures I really like, apart from the odd impulse purchase. It makes it harder to purge the collection.

I'm pretty greedy, I don't let much go. I can see sending Armada and Energon figures off to their destinies, Power Core Combiners I could conceive of letting go of entirely as a lot, maybe some pieces from the '07 movie.

I can't see getting rid of Animated, Beasties, Generations et al, G1,

If I *had* to sell though, like "lose my mortgage" style, Armada through Cybertron are gone (minus Unicron), '07 movie is gone, DOTM is gone, Prime is gone (minus Smokescreen, Wheeljack, and a Vehicon).

See, that one's a camcorder, that one's a camera, that one's a phone, and they're doing "Speak no evil, See no evil, Hear no evil", get it?

Putting aside questions of necessity (in which case anything and everything can go), I would be least willing to sell of many of my "Unicron Trilogy" toys (especially from later in that run). Similarly, my TFU/Generations figures would be some of the last I would sell.

I've had to sell and reacquire most of my collection so many times now that there's almost nothing that I would have trouble parting with. Mostly because I know I can just buy it again later. This time though in reacquiring my collection, I've focused solely on Classics/Generations. G1 would still be my favorite if only for nostalgia. RID is something I'd like to have too.

When I decide its purging time, I don't really decide on what stays or goes by line. It's more, "what is taking up a lot of space, what have I pretty much ignored lately, or what just needs to go?" The last purge was pretty brutal, as I'm sure you guys remember. A lot of good stuff went, like Primus, Unicron, Cybertron SupremeScream, and Cybertron Prime. But I really wanted to make absent in the collection, and some sacrifices had to me made. Besides, you guys got most of the stuff that left, so I know they went to good peeps.

About the only things that are safe until I'm just over collecting are G1s because I like the big clunky feel of them and nostalgia, I guess. But I have so few of them that it doesn't make a difference. Classics/Generations and whatnot are pretty safe, just because if I changed my mind, it'd be a bitch to get those again. Any versions of the 86 movie cast pretty much aren't going anywhere, and, of course, the Grimlocks would be pretty much the very last thing to go.

Of course, even the stuff I saved has still been in storage since I moved back in October. I don't even recall everything I kept.

Anyhow, nowadays I'm a lot more selective of my toy purchases, so it'll take awhile before I need another purge.

Beast Wars, Alternators and Masterpiece figures are the lines I'd say I'm the most attached to. Armada and Energon, save for Unicron I really don't have any attachment to either of these lines. Cybertron and RiD, there are a few figures I'm really attached to. Beast Machines, I'm not sure if I even have any of them anymore. And movie lines, there are a few I really like particularly from ROTF.

Which TF lines in your collection are you most attached to? For me it's the Masterpiece TF toy line. Due to it being the most perfection, most accurate homages, extremely poseable, highly beautifully sculpted, colors accurate,Superb engineering & most adult themed TF toy line of them all.

Oh, I forgot, I'd part with some of my Alternators, that line has lost some of its appeal in the last few years.

Like Scourge and his Grimlocks, my Movie Starscreams aren't going anywhere. That whole cabinet-top was collected out of pure love. After that, a lot of the Classics/Generations guys I'd want to keep around, just because of iconic value and how complete/full each team feels these days; my Classic Autobots and Decepticons are the ones I keep out consistently on display. Animated I'd probably want to keep all of too, that was a line I thoroughly enjoyed collecting and would want to hold onto (conversely, while I did enjoy collecting Cybertron, I probably wouldn't mind letting go of a lot of those).

After those constants though, it definitely devolves into a by-individual basis. Energon Sharkticon and Slugslinger aren't going anywhere, those are two bros I'm way too fond of. G1 Sky Lynx is sticking around, that thing's a jewel of my collection. ROTF Mindwipe and his whole 'team' I would want to keep, as that's a group I'm inordinately fond of. Several beast-era toys are ones I'd cling too, like Tigerhawk, my multiple TMII Prowls, T-Wrecks, K-9...others from that era I could honestly see myself kicking to the curb if push came to shove. The few club/convention exclusives I have, G2 Ramjet and G2 Cindersaur, I would probably keep just because of how impossible/cost-prohibitive it would be to reacquire them if I decided I wanted to.

And of course, G2 Hubcap's been with me since the beginning, and will be until the end of time. If there's a fire, and I can grab one toy, it'll be that one, since I can always rebuild as long as I have the beginning. That thing's my Scrooge McDuck #1 dime of Transformers.
