Animated Series discussion thread (spoilers allowed)

Some cartoon with big chins and a little girl that got beloved by fans and taken off TV to make way for a different show on another network. Yeah, that's fair.

I couldn't think of Professor Princess's name when I was listing the dumb villains, but yes, she'd be at the top of the list. She's the one who shows up in "Sound and Fury", correct? A kid riding a flying unicorn and throwing exploding toys at Bulkhead? I could not believe what I was watching when she turned up out of nowhere! Holy cow!

I guess I have no soul. :P

Needless to say, I haven't been too impressed with any of the supervillains on the show. Maybe they'll improve in future.

That's half the fun, the general absurdity of these villains. They're so over the top and out of place and they 'know it.'
Sparky Prime wrote:The Autobots didn't even try to establish contact with Cybertron once they woke up on Earth. Come to think about it, when the Elite Guard shows up, Ultra Magnus doesn't sound happy that they spent all that time and resources just tracking down Optimus's crew. And they didn't even start fixing their ship until pretty much the end of season 1. Not to mention "Along Came a Spider" establishes that organic worlds are supposed to be off-limits to Autobots. I'd really have to agree with andersonh1's point's here in that it never really made sense that the Autobot's stayed on Earth or at least tried to contact Cybertron.
It does make sense, though--their ship was royally screwed and they clearly had no method of contacting them. Plus, there's the whole thing with protecting Detroit and such--the humans make them feel far better about doing their jobs than the Autobots ever did, so why bother going back to that shit job?

That, and once the end of the pilot happens and Starscream shows up, they have a *definite* reason for staying on Earth--there's Decepticons in them thar hills.

Their ship may have been badly damaged, but obviously they were able to get it flying again. Plus we really have no idea what the status of their communications where. We never saw them trying to contact anyone. Even if they couldn't use their ship, they could have at least tried improvising something using Earth technology. And they weren't sticking around because of the Decepticons. They knew they could barely handle even one Decepticon. When more Decepticons start showing up (Blitzwing and Lugnut) near the end of the season, that's when Optimus finally decides they should start fixing the ship and leave in order to protect Earth.

Sticking around just because the humans treated them better and to protect them from those lame human super villains is abandoning their post.

What's your point? We know that these guys aren't the best of soldiers anyway, and they clearly don't hold that much respect for their superiors.

My point is, the Autobots really didn't have a good reason to stay on Earth for season 1. And Optimus I would have to say is a good soldier. If not for getting all the blame for what happened on the Spider Planet, he probably would be in the Elite Guard by now. He doesn't like or respect Sentinel but they are the same rank. However, he is shown to respect his superior Ultra Magnus.

Since Starscream disappears in the explosion, do they even know for certain that he's still alive at that point? Do they make any effort to find out? It's hard to view their actions as anything other than just camping where they are, when they ought to at least be trying to contact Cybertron and command. If nothing else, the idea that their ship would take time to repair could have been introduced at that point in the series as a reason for staying where they were, instead of halfway through the season, and it would have settled the issue.

Ultimately it's a nitpick, but I always prefer to have sound reasons for characters to act and make decisions. Arbitrary decisions made simply so the plot can advance the way the writers want it to bother me.

I've got my point, though, where they're not exactly good soldiers in the first place, have no idea what the status of Cybertron is...and probably don't *care* because they're treated like shit on it anyway. The Elite Guard guys basically take a dump on them at every chance they get. I can see why they're not exactly anxious to go back to that.

Granted, these guys are supposed to be The Autobots--the goody-two-shoes heroic guys who can do no wrong. I 'hate' those guys, and seeing these guys in this kind of flawed light is pretty sweet.

How much is the status of Cybertron really going to change in only 50 years? It's not like they wake up and the planet isn't there anymore. If nothing else, they should have made contact to figure things out. And we know the Decepticons are at such a significant disadvantage with out the Allspark or Space Bridge technology that most Autobots haven't even seen a Decepticon at this point in time. And despite the mistreatment (specifically from Sentinel Prime), Cybertron is still their home. And the Elite Guard did spend 50 years looking for Optimus and his crew because they had the Allspark with them. Optimus did his duty in contacting Ultra Magnus when they found the Allspark in the first place. Why wouldn't he contact him to update him on the situation 50 years later? They might be a crew of misfits, but they still do the right thing... sooner or later.

I still have to agree with agree with andersonh1's points here. They should have at least tried to contact Cybertron once they woke up to update them on the situation. And they should have started repairs on their ship right away as well, rather than wait until more Decepticons start showing up when it would already be too late for them to make the repairs and get out of there. Even if they are the worst soldiers from Cybertron, this should have been common sense.

Noooooot so much. Read the first issue of The Arrival. The Elite Guard pronounce Prime and crew dead soon after the events of the pilot, and even hold a funeral for them (Sentinel gives the eulogy). The crew was so far down on the higher-ups' priority list that they saw fit to simply write them off on the assumption that the Allspark was in a safely obscure location once again. No wonder their reaction upon waking up on Earth would be "Screw those guys".

Anyway, I was always under the impression that Prime and crew stuck around on Earth because they felt sorry for the poor humans who couldn't even stop an evil Green Arrow rip-off from robbing their banks. They are a compassionate bunch, after all. Also, even if they knew they were capable of getting their ship flying again (and remember that they were never entirely sure of that), who's to say their communication equipment was also in working order? Even with slight-future Earth technology and a Magic MacGuffin Key, I'd think it would be pretty hard to rig up a device capable of beaming a message to a planet light-years away, especially if they didn't even know where Cybertron *was* in relation to Earth.

The episode "The Elite Guard" would seem to disagree give Ultra Magnus says "We've wasted enough time and valuable resources tracking down these stragglers". There is no mention of "oh by the way, we would have been here sooner but we thought you were dead". To me the episode indicates they've been looking for them this whole time.

And if they had written them off as dead, you'd think the Autobots would have still thought to conduct a search for the Allspark make sure it wasn't in Decepticon hands.
