Yeah, I can see minicons causing all sorts of headaches. They could also be assigned a "mission" or "objective" at the beginning of a turn costing the player only one task for the turn. I was thinking more in terms of main character holding minicon in gun mode, effectively causing the minicon to function as the character's main weapon. Or if the minicon is functioning as armor. Or a melee weapon.
I'll try to work up some more specifics this weekend. There's certainly a lot to work with and figure out, but I have faith that we'll come up with something workable.

-Player characters shouldn't really be in danger of dying unless the player does something phenomenally stupid.

See, this is why you're a gentleman and a scholar.
Fixed.

And I just thought of something else: In addition to minicons and drones, just to muddy things up a little more:
Headmasters, Targetmasters and Powermasters. And then you have things like PCC Leadfoot who's minicon is basically both a Powermaster and a Targetmaster. I'm thinking finding one minicon would be a lot of points or unusually rare, finding one with multiple alt modes would be even more so.

The point of MInicons is that they can do many things. So, acting as weapons or armour is an option. But, if they are not doing that, the point should be that they are useful to the main character without costing them tasks per turn. It should be assumed in-game that Minicons were either told what to do before the battle, or are smart enough to figure it out.
The (much cheaper) drones could be given tasks as cost. If a Minicon is acting as a weapon, then maybe firing the weapon would not cost a task, or there would be an accuracy boost. If the Minicon is acting as armour, then they take the hits instead of the main character.

I did a bit of work on this over the break. My updates as events warrant. (Yeah, I took the week easy. I slept until noon for most of it. Deal with it. I was tired.)
On thing that I realized.....the PCC Minicons have pop-off limbs, which makes them more easily customized. I have not worked out specific compatibilities yet. But, yeah, Minicons are always fun.

-good luck finding extras, but....

I want my character to be a steam engine. A steam engine with four train cars, and a Minicon caboose.
Name to follow.

Like I said over the phone this morning, binary names work well.
Dom
-likes the train idea quite a bit.

The steam engine will be Rail Jumper. The Minicon will be Boiler Man.
Maybe Boiler Man will look as if he's wearing a little hat.

Dom has suggested the superior (in my opinion) name for the Minicon of Dead Stop. So he shall now be known.
It should be noted Dom also suggested to me that the Minicon be named Buttermilk, and I believe his reasoning mainly involved the Minicon being "my caboose."
Unsurprisingly I decided to stick with Dead Stop.
