"Universe" was not as consistently bad on as many levels as "Final Crisis".

The real thing here is that I am pretty sure that none of the guys working on "Universe", or the later Fun Publications comics, have the skill of Grant Morrison.

Morrison is a brilliant writer. Thus, when he wants to write a petty, self-indulgent story about stories and the people who read them, it is truly awful despite the fact Morrison can do better. Morrison "crafted" FC to be bad on multiple levels. He managed to put together a visual representation of how convoluted modern comics are.....in one panel.....all in a story that commited nearly every sin Morrison claims to be against.

The guys writing "Universe" could not write that kind of layered bad-ness if they tried.
