The problem is that you guys are talking about casting appropriateness. And, Bay (or for that matter his fans) do not get that sort of "hard stuff". Cullen works as a tired old soldier, not a bad ass hero.

Gomess is on to something. In general terms, the movies take the worst bits from TF and amplify them. I will probably see the 3rd movie. But, the only reason I have not pitched my movie toys is because I have not gotten to it yet.

Dom
-will probably be skipping the comics as well.

There's a reason the original live-action Thor is playing an aged mentor in the new movie, y'know? ;p

Seriously though, I'm just not into Cullen without Welker. Call me a GEEWUN, but. Simple as.

Much as I like Cullen/Welker I'd actually like to see Chalk/Kaye come back.

I greatly prefer Chalk as Primal, as opposed to Prime, honestly. His voice just works better for that sort of character. Oddly, I love Kaye as just about any iteration of Megatron. And at least one iteration of Optimus Prime.

Wouldn't mind seeing Kaye and Chalk have some sort of roles in TF3 though. Could be cool.

Cullen as an aged mentor Prime

Chalk as a young and more emotional Prim(e/al) under him

Kaye as a daring and charismatic new Decepticon leader

Welker as a paranoid, in-hiding, Big Boss / Colonel Kurtz style retired rebel whom Kaye's leader visits in secret

MAKE IT SO

I would a hundred percent get behind that.

Gary Chalk is 58. He's not that much younger than Peter Cullen.
Kaye as a daring and charismatic new Decepticon leader
David Kaye was very good for Beast Wars Megatron. His voice acting was somewhat "plummy" and theatrical, which worked because that version of Megatron was one who put on a front of being civilized and refined, but who was actually vicious and savage. Kaye's performance was not naturalistic in any way. It was an affectation, which was what it needed to be. The peformance did evolve during Beast Machines, so it's likely Kaye would be up to the challenge. Still, I'd have to hear him adapt his style to be convinced that his "Megatron voice" would work for another version of the character.

Heheh, I guess you're not really into voice acting if you think 58's too old to do a young character's voice? ;] Really though, it has nothing to do with the real guys' ages. It's about what most TF fans think when they hear their voices. Heck, back in 1997 I would've gotten a kick out of Cullen cameoing as Primal's boss. If Chalk can still do Primal, he can still do 'young'.

As for Kaye's ability to play a naturalistic villain, I'd WANT him to be a completely OTT villain who uses charisma to achieve what his lack of actual power can't. Basically how G1 Starscream would've been if he'd ever become leader for real. And I know Kaye's got a flexible voice, so I'd love to hear what he could do.

Ahh! Fantasy is occasionally a good place to be.

A reclusive failure who neglects his troops' wellbeing so he can hide in his quarters talking to the Matrix all the time?

Haha, reclusive? You saw TFTM, right? The guy hadn't even *done* anything and he'd already gathered the entirety of his race in a throne room (since when did they have one??) and *crowned* himself. And he was really only a coward when Megatron was around. I don't recall him giving a toss about the Matrix, either. No, I'm pretty sure G1 Starscream's tenure as leader, had Galvatron not intervened, would've gone something like this:

"ATTACK!"

"Shouldn't we plan a--"

"ATTAAAAACK!"

"Megatron would've--"

"ATTAAAAAAAAAACK!!"

*Decepticons all die in a blaze of glory and stupidity, series ends*

And that's something the movies will never change.
