First off, 'Brony' is just the word for someone in the fandom, akin to 'Trekkie' or 'Transfan', I'm not sure what distinction you're making. Second of all, adult fans of MLP: FiM are hardly the most respected demographic in the first place, so I don't know that there's that far to fall. Third, a tertiary toyline expansion like this won't bring 'scrutiny' on such things any more than Kre-O made anyone take a second look at Transformers and the fans of that.
I'm just still not sure what you're *worried* about here. That people might think adult, male fans of My Little Pony are kinda weird? Uh...

So your main concern about the change in direction of a Hasbro franchise is how other people are going to percieve it's fans because of it? I'll save you the trouble: Those "outside the fandom" already think all bronies are creepers. There's not going to be a distinction there and that's even assuming that anyone outside the fandom is giving any thought to MLP at all, which I'll garauntee they're not. They're soccer moms who are more concerned with taking care of that next other thing to even expend thought on whether or not adult MLP fans are creepy or not. In other words, no one cares. And those that do will already know the difference.
