The imminent Smash Bros. shovelware game based on this upcoming movie better have Super Shredder as the final boss. But he's just under a pier like at the end of the second movie and you don't even see him.

Weird thing about a Turtles fighter: do the Turtles actually have different stats? I know we've been discussing MK, and that series has gotten away with having characters with identical power/speed/agility/weight for decades, but let's assume we're aiming high here. I actually vaguely recall the bios that came with the first Turtles toys describing their various shell hardness. One of them was "like a tank" and another was "like old chewing gum". Presumably the hard kind of old chewing gum.

I think I might have Trilogy on the 360? Or it might just be UMK3. Or maybe it's a 3 pack of 1,2 and 3... I need to check, but point being if you have a 360 we totally could play MK online.

Of course, if it's not MKT that wouldn't really let us use the bosses now would it?

Yeah, far as I know Trilogy is the only one where the guys we're talking about are all playable. Except Armageddon, which obviously doesn't count for so many many reasons

But the tragedy is I don't have an Xbox 360! Or even an Xbox 180! The most modern console I have is a PS2. We'll just have to keep this battle to words, SAVE IT FOR THE PODCAST

Didja ever play MK Sub Zero? Because that was a pretty good game.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is a specific game that's kind of the next step up from UMK3--it's got every single character who ever appeared in an MK game up to that point, so Johnny Cage is back in (with all new sprites!) as well as a bunch of other dudes. It was only released on the PSX and N64, although there is a hacked Genesis version (that requires a special emulator) that actually allows you to play as 'literally' every person in the MK franchise--so you can play as MK1 Sub-Zero (or Scorpion, or Reptile, or Liu Kang) and fight everyone from MK2 and UMK3.

Yeah I have it for both systems. I think the PSX was better because it readily had everyone available, you didn't have to put in any codes or whatever. The N64 still had some unlocking to do which always kind of annoyed me. I mean, I don't mind a few secrets and easter eggs in a game but UMK3 had reached a point where almost 90% of the game was a secret.

I thought Mythologies: Sub-Zero was a nice idea, elaborating on a character's backstory, but I wish it'd had done it in a more original way, plot-wise. The whole "four elements" (inexplicably in a Far East setting, where five or even eight elements would've been more appropriate) thing just seemed rushed. And the MK system was *not* made for a beat 'em up. Like I said, though, good basic idea. They could've elaborated on the adventure and puzzle-solving aspects too, given SZ a few more ways to use his ice powers, like building bridges or cooling hot things, etc etc.

I have a weird relationship with MK actually, since I like it in that nostalgic way, but am so aware of its many many many faults. Haven't touched the newest one, I hear good things about the gameplay but (a) I'm suspicious and (b) the aesthetic just looks to have gotten worse. What happened to the enigmatic kungfusploitation atmosphere? It looks like something from Games Workshop or, like, God of War now. Meh.

Funny you should say that, Kratos is actually a playable character on the PS3 version.

That's perfect. Every MK character in it should have an alternate costume where they have an anachronistic goatee and permafrown.

You know what I mean, though? MK3 seemed like a conscious choice to go cyberpunk, but MK4+ it just seemed like... I dunno, the franchise lost all aesthetic integrity and became a derivative mess. As if the old artists had just *gone*. I mean, it never had LOADS of integrity, but it had SOME. Yeah, I'm sure there are people who find designs like Fujin, Jarek, Darrius and Dairou memorable, buuuuut...

I actually did some reading into all that once, and the weird thing was that the dip in design quality coincided with John Tobias' departure from the company. But what did Tobias go on to design? Tao Feng. So. Pretty sure he wasn't the secret to the old games' quality. Or maybe it just needed him and Ed Boon working together, that's often the way.

The conversation about insane fighting game bosses made me resolve to bring up the Touhou fighting games, just for how (appropriately for the franchise) completely over-the-top ridiculous the bosses in those get. They're so psychotic they loop past 'frustrating' right back around into 'fun'. For real. Magaki's projectiles have nothing on these ladies.

EDIT: LUNATIC MODE?! Aw never mind, the guy playing in that one is way too good to show it off or anything.
