Eh... I suppose I can see him working as a theme for trust, being a former Decepticon, but I really don't see that Drift was "thematically needed" in this story at all or that he was highlighted having that purpose. Costa had done a better job of that in just 2 issues of the ongoing than Drift did in any issues McCarthy wrote, and it's a much more relevant theme in the ongoing as well.

Drift also works with the purpose theme in AHM.

Leadership is a theme in both AHm and the ongoing.

How does Drift work with the theme of leadership? Again, he barely does anything in the story.

Drift is consistent with the theme of "having a purpose" in AHM.


I mentioned the leadership theme to point out that the " much more relevant theme " of the ongoing is part of AHM as well.

And what would that purpose be then? Because again, he really doesn't do much of anything in the story to show what, if any, purpose he had.

McCarthy comments on Drift's purpose in the story:

To represent another facet of the war and also to play into the themes of forgiveness (or lack there of). Even the heroes of the story (well, some of them) don't accept him or his place in their ranks. Regardless of how often he proves his worth (which he risks a great deal and goes to great lengths in order to do) he still isn't accepted by all (the reason he was asked to stay outside after carrying Ironhide to safety).

I know in his Spotlight story Drift's stated purpose was simply to save lives. He knew that the Decepticons in the ship had Autobot prisoners. He just happened to arrive when Kup's group did. And Kup offers him membership in the group because "everyone deserves a second chance". He does rescue Perceptor in the Spotlight issue, and save Ironhide from the Swarm in AHM.

And there may be more. I'd need to go back and re-read the portions of the story that focus on him to see if he says anything else to indicate his frame of mind and intent.

Big thing about Drift is that, besides his Spotlight, he never really does anything of true note. Even his big "I'M THE NEW CHARACTER AND I'M SO FUCKING BADASS LOOK AT ME KICK THIS SWARM DUDE'S ASS" scene is quickly cut short by...Perceptor sniping the Swarm dude to death.

Both AHM and the ongoing have similar themes and ideas, meaning it is hard for the ongoing to have more relevant ideas than AHM.

I didn't say anything about one having more relevant ideas than the other... I said the theme of trust is much more relevant in the ongoing as we see the Autobots splintering from each other and one group struggling to trust humans while others talk to he Decepticons who are also stranded on Earth. Clearly the Ongoing has very different points of focus, giving it some different themes and ideas compared to AHM.
