Which movie toys have the most lasting appeal?

Money, violence, sex, computer graphics, scatalogical humor, racism, robots designed to be rednecks but given European accents, and maybe another sequel to the saga... what's not to love? TF m1, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon and now Age of Extinction.

Which movie toys have the most lasting appeal?

Post by onslaught86 »

Having recently moved, I'm putting a lot of my stuff back on shelves after not fiddling with it for some time. And a lot of this is Movie Crap. I chucked the majority of it in storage, as I ran out of room, but the favourites remain on display. And having taken them down and put them back up again, it occurred to me that a lot of them are pretty average. They're 'good' toys, with nothing functionally wrong with them, yet without the Here And Now appeal of the movie being current, they lose a lot of their appeal.

So, for you, which Movie line figures have retained long-term appeal? I still need to finish sorting through mine, but Wreckage really stands out amongst the early batch.

It's hard to say. I've been busy enjoying Classics/Universe lately and haven't really had any of the movie bots out. I think that Stockade is likely to remain one of my favorites though.

Landmine is a well rounded guy. I had a friend come over who doesn't know anything about the movie and she immediately grabbed Landmine and was like "oh look a transformer". I think it's noteworthy that among all the other movie toys, he looked the most like a transformer, the others are kind of just mangled wrecks to the untrained eye.

I love Landmine and Stockade (Stockade really *feels* like "normal" TF, if you can get what I mean), and Landmine actually stayed on my table for a while after I swapped everything else out for Classics and Animated. I'm actually rather fond of the Voyager Megs mold as well, despite not being fond of that design in any other iteration (the fiery Target-exclusive version tempts the HELL outta me). Incinerator's great too, along with Jazz (I prefer the G1-color version, just in terms of visual interest). And yes, Wreckage rules (Even better, it looks like he's gonna pop up in IDW's upcoming ROTF prequel comic). Oh, and though he doesn't get much love from anyone else, I really, really dig Dropkick, although the entertainingness of his bio contributes to that. I really do love that toy though, especially the vehicle mode deco.

It's interesting that most of my favorites are off-screen characters...

By and large the Non-movie chars were way more normal. Look at Long-arm.

Longarm rules, totally.

Leader Prime is clearly the centerpiece of the line. He's the best of them. Sure, he's hampered by having a really cruddy gun, but whatever, right?

Barricade could have been 'so much' better. It's a pity.

I like Salvage myself, but can definitely see the appeal of Landmine or Longarm.

For "on-screen" characters, I like retro=BB and Barricade. Barricade is flawed, but the mold has real fiddly appeal. Bonecrusher, despite being out of scale with most every other toy at his price-point, is great fun. He, Wreckage, and Devestator/Brawl display well together, and all 3 are fiddlyl.

Jazz and Swindle have inexplicable appeal.

Oddly, despite the hype, and my own anticipation, Incinerator was one of the first I packed away. Still, the Voyager scale had some fun in it. Both Ratchets are favorites of mine. ASP Ironhide is also fun, with those sliding leg panels providing hours of fun.

The Leader Class toys, or at least their appeal, has kind of petered. Megatron and Brawlistator have both grown in my eyes. I would not buy additional recolors of either, but I like both now more than I inititally did. (Brawlistator is still my least favorite.) Prime has lost some of his initial appeal. I like the toy in both forms. But, is loses points for being too big to be fiddly.

I found Landmine too irksome to transform. He's clever, and has that model-like appeal that nicely sculpted vehicle modes give off, but parts pop off with too much ease and he doesn't lock together nicely. He's a good toy, yet he's not a satisfying toy.

Longarm, sadly, is much the same. I do like Longarm, I really do. He looks good, he's got a clever transformation, a great headsculpt, a giant gun, and a subtle and nifty homage. His vehicle mode's rendered well too, and the gimmick works in both modes. Problem is, he just doesn't encourage me to pick him up and mess with him, he's just sort of There, and so are a lot of the movie figures.

Super Prime, too - a great toy, he really is, yet he isn't practical, and has limited posing potential thanks to the lack of waist and wrist articulation, along with the wonky knees. I still want one of the redecos, though, probably nab one in the post-christmas clearances.

As for ones that do have lasting appeal, Stockade is definitely up there. Great piece of work, the SUV mode is everything Universe Ironhide's wanted to be. There's something about him that really grabs my imagination. I look at SUVs on the road and imagine them transforming, lumbering along on their knuckles like gorillas, and hurling other vehicles out of the way.

Bonecrusher too, that's such an original design. Probably one of the most Vehicon-esque of the movie releases, thanks to his wheely feet and extending arms. He's in the same boat as Stockade, and it helps that he's such a unique vehicle. The makers of the minesweeper now use him in their demonstrations, heh.

Ratchet, NewBee, the Megses, Ironhide, Blackout, Barricade, all fall into the Meh department long-term. Shame that.

I was never big on Blackout. I liked the toy, but did not fall in love with it as some people did. I actually saw Blackout the day I got my pre-street date Ratchet. At first, I was kind of let down that I did not get Blackout. (Two of my friends snagged them.) But, after fiddling, I was much happier with Ratchet.

Ironhide is much better in the repainted Blue of the ASP variant. The "all black" scheme is movie accurate, but hides some nice details.

-thinks Evac has a certain odd charm.

I'm surprised to hear all the love for Stockade, I was under the impression that he got a lukewarm response. I still see him in stores occasionally, maybe I should pick him up if I get the chance. He would be the last movie toy i get
