I still think The Gathering was a good story that had a lot of potential. Although it would have been interesting to see what Dreamwave did with it, since Furman reused a lot of his ideas from that for The Gathering, but had a more direct role for the show's cast and started out at the end of season 3 rather than the middle of it... Anyway, it's just too bad The Ascending and the source books were such terrible followups.

We know (based on the '04 Summer Special) that Dreamwave's BW series would have been set after Primal and the others had left Earth. In all likelihood, it would have contradicted the 3H comics. But, as BotCon had been run in to the ground that summer, that would have been a minor concern.

For about 5 years, "Beast Wars" and "Beast Machines" were the only TF content in the US aside from (poorly written) character profiles on the backs of the packages. There was no comic. It was "tv show or nothing". That gives the Beast-shows a bit more weight in the eyes of some fans. IDW tried too hard to work that angle. Furman resorted to the sorts of tricks one typically found in examples of bad fanfic a decade earlier to make the comics not only fit with a decade-old show, but to have it happen alongside (rather than after) said show.

We know that from more than just the Summer Special. Simon Furman actually posted the script of the first issue on his blog, and Don Figeruoa posted several pages of his line art for it on his DeviantArt page.

I agree that there was lots of potential in a Beast Wars comic. It's just that the way they went about it was all kinds of wrong.
