The Id, Ego, SuperEgo Game

Post by Mako Crab »

This is a little something I like to do just for fun. I like to break down characters in fiction and see if I can fit them into the model of the psyche as represented by the Id, Ego, and SuperEgo. It was something we did in Media Analysis class. I thought it'd be something fun to do if anyone wanted to toss their own observations in too.

Super bare bones definitions:

ID- The Pleasure Principle. It thinks of itself first. Is often represented by the villains, but not always (Han Solo and Bones McCoy are examples of good guy Ids). Can be a source of impulse, creativity and destructive behavior.

SUPEREGO- In conflict with the ID more often than not. Where the ID acts on what would please itself, the SUPEREGO acts on societal norms and tends to think of others.

EGO- Caught in a constant battle between the ID and SUPEREGO, the EGO has to take all this conflicting input and make decisions and decide how to act upon them.

ANIMA/ ANIMUS- Anima is the feminine side of a man. Animus is the masculine side of a woman. Often seen in fiction as a character that helps the SELF (or main character) along a journey of personal growth.

And with that out of the way, I'm going to toss out a couple.

Star Wars:
ID: Han Solo, EGO: Luke Skywalker, SUPEREGO: Obi-Wan/Yoda, ANIMA: Princess Leia.

Masters of the Universe:

ID: Prince Adam, EGO: He-Man, SUPEREGO: Man-At-Arms, ANIMA: Sorceress. On this one, I think Sorceress could also serve as Superego with Teela being Anima, but on some level I think this works better.

And for the Star Wars prequel Trilogy:

ID- Senator Palpatine

Ego - Anakin

SuperEgo- Obi Wan

Anima- Padme . . . maybe. I'm not sure she really does much to be considered a proper Anima. Sometimes the love interest is just the love interest.

I was trying to break down the G1 characters. For the 'cons it's pretty easy.

Id- Starscream

Ego- Megatron

SuperEgo- Shockwave

For the bots though . . . I'm not really sure.

Id- Ironhide maybe? A little more impulsive, little more shootin' from the hip type.

Ego- ???

SuperEgo- Optimus Prime
