February Hauls

Post by Dominic »

Wow, nearly 2 weeks in and no hauls?

-Angel Exterminatus: The latest "Horus Heresy" novel. I forget which number. In any case, GW has changed the format on the novels from "regular paperback" to "high end paperback". They are also aggressively marketing various "direct to reader" exclusives. GW is definitely making a push to be seen as much, if not more, as a publisher than a gaming company. As much as I like the newer format over-all, it annoys me because it means that it will (at best) be more difficult for me to get the whole series in one consistent format.

-customizing yielded: A painted Matrix. (I used a spare copy of the 2002 Matrix that was re-issued as part of the "Battle in Space" pack.)

-End of War: Being snowed in for a few days gave me a chance to play around with cell-phone games. "End of War" is a top-down strategy game requiring players to move a 3 man team through an obstacle course. The game play is slow, and the dangers are easy enough to avoid. But, it is a good way to pass time while waiting for a bus or train.

Crap. Now that you mention it, I do have a couple of things to post:

TF Prime Starscream McDonald's toy: My parents got me this cause they were at McDonald's and they know I like TFs. Of all the characters they could have gotten, they managed to pick my favorite from this show even though toy wise I'm kind of avoiding Prime like the plague. Still, this is a good representation of his bot mode with a missile firing gimmick to boot. Not the best happy meal toy ever, but not a bad one.

Classics Grimlock: Bought this off O6 and forgot to make a "hauls" thread because I've posted about it everywhere else. Also, I'm given to understand that the "blackwash" look is not an O6 custom, but originally painted by hasbro. Still, got a great figure at a great price.

It's been an expensive month for me, okay! I had to pay for a doctor visit for the cat, I got a filling the dental plan didn't pay for all of, I've gotta renew my car registration... I had a Generations Sound Blaster in my hands last week, but put it back because I knew I just couldn't swing it right now.

That said, my one luxury purchase so far was a ticket to see Lewis Black last week, and that was great. So uh, there?

I get paid this Thursday. THEN I'm gonna buy shit.

In an idiotic turn of events, I took money I earned from selling crap I don't want and bought a junker G1 Shockwave to repair my old Five Cent Shockwave. (The body cavity broke on mine. Yeah, for real.) And then I bought a G1 Jetfire for $39 shipped, and he isn't yellowed at all! He's not perfect, of course--could use new stickers, and I had to clean him up a little bit (dusty and dirty here and there, but nothing damaging) and his little flippy backpack won't stay up (the clip is a little broken, but not enough that it flops down or anything) and he doesn't have any of his armour or his gun, but other than that, he's great. Oh, and I'd say he could use new stickers--gonna look into making a Reprolabels run soon.

It's fulfilling! A lifelong dream, this guy. Or at least for the last ten years or so. From pretty much the moment I found out G1 Jetfire was a thing that existed, I've wanted him, and now that I have him...it's awesome. It's fulfilling a dream. Classics Jetfire is totally paling in comparison now. I almost want to get rid of him now.

Prowl, I totally get what you are saying. I was just suprised that I had the first haul, nearly 2 weeks in.

G1 Jetfire is a good robot/jet toy. (I would not mind getting some Robotech figures in general, if they were not so damned expensive. But, I could never see it as a TF, even as a kid. (I always recognized it as being from that other line of robots, so Jetfire looked "wrong" when displayed with my TFs.)

If you sell your 2006 Jetfire, let me know.

In the case of both Jetfire and Shockwave here, it's a matter of getting them both cheaper than I typically would. A complete Jetfire in even "good" condition (let alone non-yellowed or anything like that) will easily run you $70-150 depending on condition. Shockwave can be had for less, but it's still a pain to find one. I can complete Jetfire slowly over the course of a year in $5-10 bits for armour. I have a Shockwave I can rob parts from. (The Shockwave I bought is only missing an arm and his electronics don't work.) It makes sense.

This. My last Shockwave (G1) was frankensteined together from various parts bots and I later even went so far as to find a box and inserts for him. It was way cheaper than just buying one already in that condition on ebay.

I will say however, that if I never have to pull apart or put together another G1 Shockwave in my life it will be too soon. That thing is a pain in the ass six ways to Sunday and twice on Tuesdays.

The rods that the screws go into on mine broke. That's how screwed I was.

I have legitimately considered just putting the arm on the other Shockwave and selling the parts.

See, I told ya.

Picked up Beast Hunters Voyager Optimus Prime last night at Target. Spent like a good ten minutes waffling between him and Predaking, and even had both of them in my cart at one point, but ultimately decided that I was more likely to buy the hugeass version of Predaking that’s coming out later than I was the hugeass Optimus, and I wanted to be able to justify spending Voyager money on Soundblaster when/if I found him later. So Optimus got the go! I’ve loved this new design for Prime Prime since I first saw pictures of the Commander-class version of it, it’s basically if Optimus fell into the WH40k universe and got looted by Orkz. The truck mode is a boxy, mean-looking thing, with the spike-claw-things on the front of it with extra armor plating bolted on, and guns stuck on the sides of it. Transformation is almost entirely Classics Prime again, though the front bumper and the wheels slot into his back more gracefully than the fanny pack ClaPrime was stuck with (this bit is grievously mistransformed on BH Prime in package, took me a little bit to realize how it was supposed to go). Robot Mode is a big, awesome robot toy. I love how it just concentrates on being a cool action figure of a mean-looking Optimus Prime, there’s no line-wide gimmickry with spring-out Powerizer weapon nonsense or anything. He’s just got a big, badass sword and a couple of cool missile launchers with opening claws on them. And then you can stick the launchers on his back and fold open the wings to give this thing a jetpack, it’s sweet. He’s not quite on the ‘cool toy’ level of Cybertron Optimus Prime, but this one still definitely scratches that itch I have for toys 9-year-old me would’ve loved the hell out of.

It sucks, because now I actually want to get Voyager Predaking MORE so I have a same-sized dragonbastard for this beefy mo’fo to tussle with. Lemme get my bills paid then I’ll see how much I can justify it.

Non-Transformers haul: bought the 1964 Doctor Who story "The Reign of Terror" on DVD. ROT is missing two episodes out of six, but for this release they animated the two missing episodes. They tried this once before, and while animation never captures the essence and performances of the actors, if nothing else I finally get to watch these missing episodes in context with the rest of the story instead of having a gap between episodes 3 and 6. The animation isn't terribly impressive, but it's decent, it gets the job done and it tells the story.
