Sports are awesome

Post by Shockwave »

Kinda picking up the "___ are awesome" theme from the other threads (movies, video games, comics, books, etc), here's the one about sports. Not that I've seen a lot of sports talk around here, but if y'all wanted to start, here ya go: And also picked up from the Ongoing thread:

Now, I understand you said that you enjoy watching football and you've always been cool to me so really so far you're the exception that would be breaking my prejudice.
I can think of two others, actually. Dom's on record as being a big wrestling fan. And I'm not, like, nuts about sports statistics or anything, but I really enjoy watching baseball and college-level basketball. Especially the basketball, as my local college team, University of Kansas, is traditionally really good. The local baseball team...well, they were awesome in the eighties, and I've always lived in KC, so I'm not gonna give up on the Royals anytime soon. Exercise in masochism, maybe, but there it is.
Fair enough. And now that I really think about it, I really should amend that statement anyway since one of my cousins used to be a training coach for the Oakland A's and he's a pretty decent guy. When my parents and I were stuck in North Dakota for 8 years, we went to a Twins game in MN one weekend when they were playing against the A's. We met up with my cousin and he got us tickets to the next day's game. This was back when Ricky Henderson and Mark McGuire were on the A's and Kirby Pucket was still playing for the Twins. They were actually really good games. I got to see both teams win one. And they were both my favorite teams so it was an awesome weekend all around. Also, funny story about the Royals, my parents and I were on a trip from ND to Florida to see some friends from England and go to Disney World. On the way we passed through Kansas City and got stuck in traffic due to a Royals game. Ok, I dunno how funny that was, but it's the only Royals story I got. Also, I used to play little league when I was a kid. Played it for one season and then didn't go back because... well, the rest of the team were jerks. So I've come full circle I guess.

I've also enjoyed Tennis. When we lived in England, the 'rents and I got to go to Wimbledon. It was awesome! This was back in the 80's and we got to see Martina Navratalova play against Chris Everett in a doubles match with Billie Jean King and... I forget who the fourth was. But that was some good tennis right there.

A lot of traffic thanks to a Royals game? Must have been the eighties, yeah? That's when they were good. Nowadays, we've got a Wal-Mart exec for an owner, and he runs the team like it was a Wal-Mart. Yeah, tickets are cheap, but we can't keep good players for anything. So attendance at the games has been way the hell down, unless they're playing the Cardinals or the much-hated Yankees.

Eff the Yankees, man. Eff 'em hard.

I went to a friend's roller derby bout the other day and it was awesome. There was hitting, and cheesy pretzels.

What's not to love?

I really do not approach wrestling from the sporting aspect. (Yes, it takes huge amounts of training to wrestle well. But, am definitely more focused on entertainment side of "sports entertainment".)

Dom
-afraid of soccer hooligans.

But without hooligans there'd be no wrestling at all! Or are you specifically afraid of soccer-variety hooligans more than the rest?

If I recall correctly, a while back Dom informed me that he enjoyed wrestling because it was like, "live-action Looney Tunes."

Can you possibly even come close to wanting to eff the Yankees as much as we?

I dunno, man. But by god, I try.

Any Royals fan worth his salt hates the Yankees. Of course, it might just be that any lover of baseball in general, or indeed, any lover of all that's good and decent in the world hates the Yankees.

The Yankees do seem to get a lot of hate. Also, yes, my Royals traffic jam happened in the 80's, round 88 or 89.
