Well, bugger me then.

Me sodomizar.

Sodomiser m'a alors.

Armada Pack-in Volume 2"

Sarracini/Guidi

The second issue of the "Armada" pack-in comics features Scavenger and Rollbar fending off an attack from Starscream and the Minicon Destruction Team. The structure that Scavenber and Rollbar are constructing is described as being a "satellite", but it looks more like a satellite dish array.

The Decepticons manage to destroy the array, and Starscream (somehow) gets knocked off of a cliff.

This second issue reads less like a pack-in than the first. The most obvious "buy the toy" moment is when the Destruction Team shows up, mentioning both themselves and Megatron by name. (To be fair, comics in the 80s had moments like this even when there was no imperative to sell toys.) As with the previous issue, there is an add for Dreamwave and a current product catalogue. There is also an issue for "GI Joe" featuring then current ("Spy Troops") character models.

You made me laugh with the tri-lingo post on these.

Volume 3:
Sarracini/Guidi

The tri-lingual gimmick from the previous 2 issues is dropped. It does not effect the content, but it greately improves the presentation.

The product catalogue includes the TrU exclusive re-issue line and G1 episodes being sold on video for the first time in years.

This issue includes one of the more blatant deviations from Dreamwave's main "Armada" book. While the first two issues could have been loosely reconciled with the main book (after issues 5 and 13) with minimal effort, the third issue is impossible to reconcile. The Air Defense team runs afoul of Galvatron and needs to be rescued by Optimus and Jetfire. In the US comics, Megatron never became Galvatron. (There were a few pages during "World's Collide" where Megatron took Galvatron's colouring while holding the Dark Saber. But, that is much different from Megatron being Galvatron before getting the sword.) And, in the comics, Jetfire never came to Earth.

The first 4 pages of the comic are actually pretty well set-up. But, it falls apart pretty quickly in the last four pages. Galvatron's appearance consists of him jumping out (from somewhere) and yelling "boo". And, Optimus's fight with Galvatron consists of.....a few incoherent panels worth of grappling and kicking. As much as people might complain about narrative decompression in comics, it is not as bad as this kind of hyper-compression.

At the beginning of the issue, the Air Defense Minicons are shown destroying a satellite dish. And....they refer to it as a satellite. This is the exact same mistake that Saracinni made in the second issue.....with a similar plot point. A satellite is an object that orbits another, larger, object. A satellite dish is a ground-based object used to communicate with a satellite. Between this and Saracinni's mis-labelling of a Defense Secretary as "Defense Minister", it is apparent that Saracinni did not bother to check basics while he wrote.

Guidi's rendition of the Air Defense Minicons is off model, particularly Jetstorm's and Runway's faces. This is odd, as Guidi's art was usually more consistent than that in the regular "Armada" book.

Oh man, I remember the "fight" in that one. A true headshaker.

Volume 4:

The product catalogue side of the fourth volume is thicker than in previous issues. The pictures of the toys are smaller (in order to fit more on a page) *and* a significant number of figures are not listed. I had forgotten how big that "Armada" was. (It was not even the *only* TF line at the time, sharing space with "Alternators", the re-issues, "Universe" and HoC.) there is a double-page ad (using a gate-fold cover) for "Built To Rule". That line makes "Kre-O" look good by comparison.

Sarracini handles the writing of the comic and Raiz is back on pencils.

All things considered, this issue is the best paced of the four. Unfortunately, it is not a complete story. The Autobots have captured Galvatron between this the third comic and are transporting him to prison. Tidal Wave shows up to help Galvatron escape. Optimus and Overload engage the bad guys.....and Unicron shows up. The end. Go home kids.

In fairness to Hasbro, the idea was probably to encourage kids to work out the ending on their own (and maybe buy some more toys). But, the end result is that a pack-in comic ends up reading like the middle of an arc for a book that would normally be available in a comic shop.

The later "Energon" pack-in comics make reference to a fight with Unicron, which implies that the Autobots and Decepticons somehow managed to save themselves (and likely Cybertron). But, the series feels incomplete. (If I were a kid when this came out, I may have been wholly soured on comics by virtue of not getting the full monty.)

The small size of the pages, and the general darkness of the art do no favours for Raiz. Based on other work he has done, he can deal with one or the other. But, his art style cannot work with both small pages and dark colours at the same time.
