Unicron Trilogy pack-in comics

Acronyms and abbreviations are fun. That, or these lines don't deserve quite enough respect for full names.
Robots In Disguise, Armada, Energon, Cybertron - there, that's their names, happy now???

Unicron Trilogy pack-in comics

Back in 2002, "Transformers" was more or less relaunched with the intention of bringing it back to what it had been in the 1980s. For the first time since 1987 there was a toy-line, a new animated series and a mass released comic book. (There was even a certain amount of tertiary merchandise, though not even close to as much as in the 80s.)

Part of that re-launch involved packing in comics with the figures.

Dreamwave produced 4 "Armada" pack-in comics over the course of the "Armada" line, as well as two issues of "Energon". (Dreamwave's implosion in 2004 happened before "Energon" ended.)

Each issue was essentially a flip-book, with the comic on one side and a product catalogue on the other.

The first pack-in comic (and the only one not to be numbered) features Hot Shot and Jolt disrupting a Decepticon effort (being carried out by Cyclonus and Crumplezone) to drain a city's energy. The plot is pretty much self-explanatory, and there are a few really painful scenes where the characters explicate about themselves (and things that the toys can do). Along the way, Hot Rod learns a valuable lesson about teamwork (and Minicons).

Considering what they had to work with, Sarracini and Raiz did a pretty good job. Sarracini hit all of the points that a pack-in comic would need to hit. And, Raiz delivered the goods on the art as well as any professional would on a regular comic. One of Dreamwave's strongest suites was production, and that is evident in this book. Dreamwave did not skimp on the colouring. And, despite the words all being tri-lingual (and the pages being much smaller than a normal comic), the lay-outs are clean and easy to follow. The letterer actually has some fun with the tri-lingual gimmick by placing tri-lingual sound effects in a few panels.

Despite being published by Dreamwave, the pack-in comics do not reconcile with the then current "Armada" comics. Events in one often contradicted events in the other. Despite only being 8 pages or so each, the pack-in comics are a second "Unicron Trilogy" setting that Dreamwave created. (Their "Armada: More than Meets the Eye" sourcebook was arguably more consistent with the pack-in comics than it was with their regular "Armada" comic.)

After the comic, there is a full-page add for Dreamwave's "Generation 1" series. This ad includes the 800 number for a comic book store locating service. (Say what one might about Dreamwave, they recognized an opportunity to reach new readers when they saw it.)

I can't believe you wrote so much about these pack-in comics but didn't mention the infamous "JaAm" rewrite.

Dom, I think you've covered it. For what these were, they weren't half bad little comics.

Dude, didn't you read Universe Hot Shot's profile (or look at the toy's license plate)? It's official now, broflavski!

I personally think the very act of reviewing over ten-year-old (!) toy pack-in comics is kinda silly in and of itself. What, you think there are people scouring eBay for these things loose and your review could make or break their decision to spend a few cents on it? It's just kinda goofy if you ask me. But hey, you have your own brand of fun.

I was just looking back on an obscure bit of TF media. I was kind of impressed with how Dreamwave was trying to reach new customers. Over-all, they were treating the pack-ins as legitimate (if under-sized) comics. Normally, pack-in comics have a sort of "made at a kitchen table" quality to them. They are assumed to be done by low paid, (or even unpaid), interns. But, aside from the basic plot, the pack-in above actually felt like a legitimate comic.

Exactly. For an idiotic fan meme, it became a thing.

I know you haven't gotten to the others yet, but these did improve considerably over time--there was a lot of complaining. Also, the original "JaAm" thing was not supposed to be endearing--it was supposed to be a painful scathing commentary on the shallow emptiness of the original. (DW, or Hasbro, took it to heart, and the next comics are a lot better.) I believe the one that features Tidal Wave, Sharkticon and Slugslinger is the best--partially because it gave characterisation to three otherwise-underutilized toys. (Tidal Wave may have been in the cartoon, but he was stupid and useless.)

People spend so much time worrying about whether a figure is "mint" or not that they never stop to consider other flavours.

That would have been a good idea if I could write well in three languages, or even compentently edit Babelfish output (or find a reliable translator).
